A Physical Memory
Some stories begin with a greeting, others choose to start with a goodbye. This story begins and ends with what remains. What you see may appear ordinary but not everything is as it seems.
Tucked away from the noisy streets of Paris, hidden from the noise of cafes and the chaos of everyday life, stands an old pavilion. To most it looks like a quiet place to rest, the perfect place to watch people. It’s weathered wooden benches offering shade from the afternoon sun. But those who know its story might think differently. They call it the Keeper of Secrets.
Few people encounter its dangerous beauty. Some say the pavilion will reveal itself only to those carrying a burden too heavy to keep looking to release it from their soul. Others believe it appears to those searching for a truth they were never meant to find. Whatever truth that may be, one thing has stayed consistent through generations, if you find this pavilion leave before it asks something of you. Before you don’t belong to yourself anymore, before you can’t find your way home.
For years, locals have whispered the same warning to anyone curious enough to seek it, especially to those seeking something deeper… answers. Should you come across a folded note resting on its bench, do not read it. Walk away, no matter how harmless or tempting it may be to read it. The note does not belong to you, and once its words become yours, your own secrets no longer belong to you either.
No one knows who writes the notes. No one knows who leaves them behind. No one knows what the note contains. They simply appear, waiting for someone willing to unfold the page.
One quiet afternoon, a young woman found this pavilion. Drawn by its essence and beauty, she noticed a single folded note resting in the weathered bench. It looks ordinary enough, “harmless” she said, softened by time and untouched by the wind. Against every warning and story she has ever heard, she heads towards the pavilion to pick up the note, curiosity clouding her judgement.
As she begins to read, not only did she feel a shift in herself but in the world around her. Suddenly the city noise faded into silence, the air went still, the pavilion no longer felt abandoned. She knew she was no longer alone, she knew someone was watching her, not daring to look up from the note, not wanting to meet her gaze.
Across from her sat another young woman. No greetings, no questions, no words were exchanged. She simply watches, as though she's been waiting for this exact moment for what seemed like a very long time. Remaining focused on the note, she was curious to see the woman that had been staring at her in silence, she got the courage to lower down the note and finally look up. When she does, their eyes finally meet. Time passed them by, neither of them moved, neither of them talked. There is no fear, no surprise, there is only what can be described as recognition, like they knew each other from another lifetime.
Who she is remains unknown. Perhaps she wrote the note, perhaps she once read the note herself, perhaps she is another curious being who never found her way home. The pavilions keep its secrets, and it keeps them very well, and those who enter become part of them. Just as suddenly as she appeared, the stranger disappeared. The note remains, the pavilion remains, but only one question lingers. Who was waiting for who?
A faint shadow seated beneath the pavilion waiting in silence, waiting for someone curious enough to unfold a forgotten note. Waiting for another secret to be exchanged? Perhaps every visitor believes they have found the pavilion, perhaps the pavilion found them, and perhaps, somewhere beneath its weathered roof. Another note is already waiting for the next person willing to read it.
