Underneath
Being by the water should bring serenity, but not here. The highway stretches for miles overhead, a ceiling of metal and concrete, while cars tear past and horns bleed into the sound of the river. That contradiction is what draws me to the Esplanade. Boston opens up beautifully across the water, but the view is always interrupted. Steel beams divide the sky, concrete constricts your movement, and machinery overwhelms the natural sound of the landscape. The city offers you beauty and denies you peace at the same time.
